Preparing for your Family Portrait Session

Making the session a success!

  1. When you arrive, I ask that your family is ready for the camera. The only exception would be to add layers to a child that ate on the way or drools like Niagara Falls.

  2. You will navigate to the GPS point shared to you in advance.

  3. We will likely start with some movement photographs to make everyone a bit more settled and comfortable.

  4. I will ask the family to pair off for isolated photographs (Just children, one parent & children, just parents, etc.)

  5. Bribery is okay with children, but refrain from rewarding with food until after the session is over. Crumbs and spills are stressful and take time away from photography. Taking food away from a child for a photo will make them dislike getting their photo taken or result in having to hide the snack behind a parent.

  6. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring stylish coats and cardigans. Cold people are unhappy. Unhappy people don't laugh when I say silly things. Laughing = good photos. Taking coats off of a cold child for a photo will make them grumpy to be photographed.

  7. Embrace your child's mood. You cannot guarantee a perfect, all-looking-at-the-camera photograph. Notice most photos I share are natural and settled in. We can always work together afterwards to photoshop that perfect photo at an additional cost.

Bring a blanket that compliments your wardrobe and that can fit your entire family.

Selecting a Wardrobe

Choose 1-2 colors to center your palette around

Don't be afraid of color! Reds and oranges can be timeless.

Patterns should be limited to 1-2 items of clothing for the family.

When in doubt, blue and white are classic and photograph well.
