This summer I was so incredibly blessed to have a crazy full season. I photographed 10 weddings, one of which was located in North Carolina, with 2 more to go!

I traveled with family to Washington (state) to see the gorgeous Pacific Northwest and drink amazing coffee everyday. My perfect nephew was born and I loved on him for a week straight in Ohio. Did I mention, I graduated with my Masters degree and landed a brand new job…?

Which brings me to my next point. Being a new school counselor is HARD. Its a lot of work and I am loving every minute of it. I have found I come home every day just to dive back into my work; with time I hope to find better balance.

15_07 Charleston and NC Film Edits007_WEB

While I seek that balance, I am choosing not to take on any new clients. I have gladly and with pride made commitments to document families on a regular basis, but cannot commit to any new clients. I took a similar break last winter and it helped me stay more connected to my work, both behind the camera and in schools.

I will not be taking on any new clients until after March 2016.

To all my couples and families,

Thank you for your trust and love. I look back on the last two years and cannot believe how far this business has come. I can’t wait to see where it goes!

To all the potential clients,

Still get in touch. I know a lot of incredibly talented photographers with the time to dedicate to telling your story. You look at others’ beautiful photos longingly because you want that captured for yourself. Do it. I haven’t met one person that has regretted getting a little bit dressed up and having their photos taken.

I only shot 32 images for personal work while there. 3 of them were out of focus as I learned my new camera. I’m okay with not having a ton of photos. In fact, I have the exact amount I need to truly remember the amazing week I spent with my best friend watching her blossom into a mother.

Hiking to Angel’s Landing. Nicknamed by our adopted travel mates “Devil’s Landing” for the shear cliffs, numerous switchbacks, and seemingly never ending path. The most rewarding hike I’ve taken on in my life.

This trip sparked something that has always been flickering deep inside of me. The urge I now feel to explore National Parks is insatiable.

I have a travel lifestyle, I consider plane tickets to be investments, but its true that it can be expensive or prohibitive for other folks. National Parks are the greatest bargain we have in the U.S. Hop in a car and go SEE THEM. Flights to Vegas are cheap, so are those deals that include rental cars. Do it! We met more Europeans enjoying our National Parks than Americans.

Need a travel companion? Ask me, I’ll probably go.

Breathing.November 18, 2014

Spain Film 005_WEB

I am so incredibly blessed. In a way that overwhelms me and stops my breath. I’m healthy, warm, well-fed, well-traveled, I could go on.  As each year of my life passes, my gratitude swells.

Recently, I traveled to Spain to spend time with my best friend and her beautiful, brand new babies (yes! twins!). Life stopped for those 6 days, yet at the same time it sped by and was more saturated. Hours would pass over one cafe table, one carafe of wine. The same time would be spent away from phones, emails, notifications. I napped, yes napped, for the first time in so long.

Spain Film 007_WEB

Included in those hours were time for reflection and introspection.  And I came to a few conclusions:

- My life is too busy. I’m going to start cutting out what doesn’t matter and focus on what is important.

- My craft as a photographer has been neglected and needs time to grow and be nurtured.

- I miss cooking and eating real, well-made food.

What does this mean?

Until March 1, 2015, I will not be taking on any new photography clients. I will continue to work with families and couples whom with I’ve already schedule sessions or who I have been photographing regularly.

Spain Film 008_WEB

Why?

- I want some time to recuperate, reexamine, and grow – so that my business and art can be more of what my clients deserve.

- I want to focus on developing more of the habits and rituals that nourish me and help me stay focused. This ranges from yoga to cooking to regularly updating my budget (oof!)

Spain Film 003_WEB

What will I be working on?

In particular, I want to improve my work as a film photographer. I want to develop more streamlined and accessible ways to give my clients information before and after their sessions. I am hoping to explore high quality print and heirloom products so that I can expand my print and tangible offerings. There’s some other logistical things. Holidays, a bucket-list dream-worthy trip to Asia, my Master’s program comprehensive exams- to name a few.

Spain Film 006_WEB

I want to reiterate- If I have a session scheduled with you or if I have been your family’s photographer in the past, our plans for a photo shoot still stand.

xo,

Carolyn

Iowa Baby Photographer | My Best Friend is Having Twins!April 25, 2014

Twinkle Twinkle Subway Art

My best friend, Marissa, also known as “my friend who lives in Spain” is having TWINS! Last weekend we gathered in Ohio to show her and the babes some love! PLUS we found out the sexes. Talk about an emotional moment, but more on that below :) Enjoy the lovelies from this Twinkle Twinkle themed Twin Shower.Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0008

All the tasty desserts were homemade :)Twinkle Twinkle little Star Dessert Table Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0002

We had guests vote- did they think it would be 2 boys, 2 girls, or 1 of each!Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0010 Baby Shower Food

For favors, we wrapped up two tiny tea lights with star tags that said “gracias” (as a nod to the twins future home and dual language!).  These tea lights are to be lit when the twins make their appearance for positive energy and prayers for safe passage.  This is especially fitting considering the theme and that twins can need a little extra love when they’re born.Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0007 Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0009

AHHHHH time for the gender reveal! Marissa sat on a sealed envelope from the doctor’s that stated the sex of baby a and baby b (she didn’t peek!). We took that envelope along with decorated boxes to a party supply store to be filled with coordinating balloons- so this was a surprise for everyone in the room, including the expecting parents!Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0003 Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0014

Needless to say, I sorta started crying and shaking at this point! I forgot to turn the camera vertical to get some shots of the balloons, oops! Too much emotion!Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0015

Both Marissa and Josep had voted for “one of each”! Marissa had 2 dreams that she was having a boy and a girl, so her instincts were correct.Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0016 Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0004

Here the Six Pack is with the glowing parents (minus Jess whose studying in Georgia)Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0005

I can’t wait to snuggle on these sweet babies :*Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0006

Of course, I couldn’t let them get away without a few more, full box/full balloon shots!Coralville Iowa Baby Photographer_0001

For planners in the NE Ohio area, this was held at Matchworks Tavern in Mentor, Ohio.
